Question: Can I use my own paper?
bullet Answer : Because paper quality and type vary, not all paper is well suited for the laser printers. ITaP does not allow paper provided by the user to be used in ITaP laser printers. Custom paper maybe used when printing with Printing Services or on your personal printer.
Question: How much can I print at a time?
bullet Answer : Please limit print jobs to 50 pages per print. Splitting large print jobs into smaller ones allows others to print in a timely manner. ; Although there is no limit on what you can print, please use common courtesy when printing large quantities of paper in the ITaP labs.
Question: What do I do if the printer isn’t working?
bullet Answer : Alert the Student Consultant on duty in your IT Computer Classroom. If it is a simple problem (e.g., no paper), they will fix it immediately. The Student Consultant will alert other IT Computer Classroom staff if the problem is more serious.
Question: What types of printing can I do?
bullet Answer : UMass Amherst IT offers:

Simplex (one-sided) printing on 8.5” x 11” (letter) and 11" x 17" (tabloid) paper on our black and white printers. We are working on offering other types of printing, in the future.
Duplex (two-sided) on 8.5" x 11" (letter), 8.5" x 14" (legal), 11" x 17" (tabloid) on our color printers and HP 9040 black & white printers.
You can print documents in color at the Learning Commons in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library and the Fine Arts Center IT Classroom. The process of getting your prints and using the pay station is the same as for regular printing.
Question: Why should I use cotton fiber paper?
bullet Answer : Behind the words and below the images, the paper you use makes an impression. The cotton fiber in Southworth Papers sends a message even before ink is applied. Its look and feel says quality, prestige and permanence. Yet Southworth cotton fiber paper’s compatibility with the latest electronic imaging techniques makes it the contemporary choice. However you choose to use it, cotton fiber paper is the start of something special. While it remains the paper of choice when you are concerned about image, cotton fiber performs well in a range of roles. While the richness of Southworth cotton fiber paper leaves a lasting impression, its strength and adaptability shouldn’t be overlooked. Cotton fiber paper’s natural composition makes it strong enough to stand up to complex printing processes and deliver consistent results.

Not only does paper with cotton content feel good, you can feel good about yourself for choosing Southworth cotton paper for your business and personal correspondence and important documents. Cotton is a natural fiber that is made from renewable and recovered materials. Cotton linters* are identified by government recycling standards as a recovered fiber, boosting cotton paper’s compliancy with most government contracts when combined with post consumer fiber.

*Cotton linters are used in the papermaking process. These are the short fibers that are not used in the textile industry, and as such would be discarded into the waste stream if not used in the making of cotton paper. This reduces the waste that would otherwise end up in landfills.
Question: Why charge for printing?
bullet Answer : As more classroom materials have been placed online, IT’s printing costs skyrocketed. For example, printing for one course with 500 students and 650 pages on readings online would use 325,000 pieces of paper. With hundreds of classes posting course content online, the numbers quickly became untenable.

IT implemented this service after extensive research on viable printing options. Many other colleges and institutions, including Smith and Mt. Holyoke Colleges in our area, use pay-for-print in their classrooms and libraries.
Question: Why is cotton used in paper?
bullet Answer : Cotton is one of the strongest and most durable fibers known to man. Papers manufactured from cotton fiber will last longer and hold up better under repeated handling and various environmental conditions than paper made from wood pulp. Generally, given reasonable care, a consumer can expect one year of usable life for every 1% of cotton contained in the sheet. Paper made with 100% cotton content can be expected to live at least 100 years.

To illustrate this attribute, it has been documented that in 1962 while perusing the Illinois Historical Society archives, a letter dated 1858 and signed by Abraham Lincoln was discovered. This letter bore the unmistakable Southworth brand watermark that has stood the test of time.

Typically cotton fiber papers are made of either all cotton fiber (100% cotton) or a blend of cotton and wood pulp. The most common blend is made of 25% cotton and 75% wood pulp.
